ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – The Ellsworth AFB Diversity Council hosted a 5k paint race, known as the Color Run, June 24, 2016 to raise awareness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.

The Color Run was the first of its kind on Ellsworth and resulted in more than 90 people being plastered by approximately 1,100 ounces of colored powder made by the council.

“The Color Run put on by the Airmen promoted diversity and awareness,” said Master Sgt. Jennifer Thielke, 28th Maintenance Squadron first sergeant. “Being a part of the LGBT community can be tough for some; society is still split on where they stand on the issue.”

Thielke believes promoting being different, regardless if because of color, age, religion or sexual orientation, is important. Every individual brings something different to the table and the run was an event in which members of Team Ellsworth celebrated diversity and inclusion.

“To see the crowd that came out to support this was inspiring,” Thielke said. “This run wasn't just a run or a celebration of pride, but a celebration of all of us.”

Thielke expressed her pride of the Airmen for their drive, passion, effort and time put into the event. Due to their hard work, the run turned out more successful than originally thought.

“The run was a huge success,” said Airman 1st Class Willie Lyons, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron customer service technician. “We were only expecting a turnout of maybe 40 people, however, we ended up doubling that number and everyone seemed to have a great time.”

Lyons spoke on how Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed in 2011 and that some still feel uncomfortable from it. The purpose of the run was a way to demonstrate the support of Team Ellsworth.

“I hope and pray that we continue to show love and support to everyone on base, whether it’s a specific religion, race or community,” Lyons explained. “I think we should all support each other as best as we can. After all, it’s one team, one fight.”
