As a young officer, he experienced air combat in World War I; afterwards served as a test pilot with Ira Eaker, Hoy Barksdale, Elwood Quesada, Jimmy Doolittle, and others achieving several aviation records. As a young officer, Carl Spaatz testified in the 1925 court-martial of General Billy Mitchell.
