ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. --
Eager to keep the base informed of recent developments regarding civilian furloughs, Col. Kevin Kennedy, 28th Bomb Wing commander, conducted a town hall at 2 p.m., May 16, at the base theater.
The meeting came on the heels of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel directing implementation of the furlough plan for civilian employees.
The onset of civilian furloughs has held hundreds of Ellsworth's workforce in a state of anticipation since the announcement.
An estimated 566 appropriated fund Ellsworth civilians were told they should expect a furlough of 88 hours, or up to 11 discontinuous workdays. In most cases, one day - or eight hours - off per week will equal a 20 percent reduction in weekly pay for each individual.
Kennedy said the furlough notices are expected to begin going out May 28, and workers will have several days to respond or seek appeals. The actual furlough period will not begin until July 8.
He added that the furlough will undoubtedly impact the base's ability to carry out its mission.
"You make up 15 percent of the workforce on our base that provides combat power we produce for our nation," he said. "I'm thankful for what you do every day -- you're valuable members of our team."
The commander emphasized that while in furlough status, it is imperative that they not do anything related to work, to include calling their office, checking e-mail and similar activities.
Prior to fielding questions from the group, Kennedy reassured those present that he and every member of the Ellsworth family will work tirelessly to provide updates and help them cope with the furlough.
"We value your contributions and understand that this is going to be a trying time for you and your families. We're here to support you through this process and provide you with information - once we get info, you'll get it from us," he concluded.
