Airmen and their families learned about the various services and programs available to them on base and in the community during the Happy Landings event Oct. 16 at the Dakota's Club.

During the event, hosted by the 28th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center, several base agencies and community organizations set up booths to provide information and answer questions.

Susan Ratkovsky, 28th FSS McRaven Child Development Center director, stressed the importance of having the Happy Landings events each month. The center offered informational brochures to help guide parents new to the base in reviewing available child care options.

"We want parents to have an opportunity to learn about different aspects of the base," Ratkovsky explained. "Having child care and being able to have confidence in knowing where your children are really helps you get a good start at your new location. I was so happy we finally brought Happy Landings to this installation - it gives me the opportunity to get face-to-face time with some of our new parents that are coming in."

Other booths showcased during Happy Landings included various social clubs, health care organizations, and representatives from housing developments catering to base personnel.

Laurie Adkins, 28th FSS AFRC community readiness consultant, who oversaw the event, said Happy Landings isn't just for people new to the base.

"People think this is just a fair for newcomers, when really, it's open to everyone," Adkins said. "This is important because it introduces the base community to resources and businesses in the local area that they may not know about otherwise. Making connections is very important for military personnel both on and off the installation."

Since the fair is conducted in conjunction with the Right Start program every third Tuesday, there are plenty of chances for Airmen and their families to participate. The next Happy Landings will not only include many of the same agencies, but will additionally showcase the many educational programs available to Airmen and their families.

"For those who may have missed the opportunity to partake in this Happy Landings event, the next fair is scheduled for Nov. 20," Adkins added. "Everyone in the Ellsworth community is encouraged to come by and see what's new."

Adkins also encouraged more on-base agencies to get involved, stressing the importance of reaching out to Ellsworth families.
