Ellsworth takes another step in preparation for the Financial Services Call Center opening as the Black Hills Community Center moves out of what will become an administration building and into the Youth Center/Health and Wellness Center building.

The community center is not only in a new location, it also has a new focus.

"Our main focus is to be a place for Airmen to kick back and get out of the dorms," said Mr. Chad Canaan, 28th Services Squadron community center director.

Because of the smaller size, the community center has adjusted some of its programming. Many of its annual events like the Talent Show, Battle of the Bands and Flea Market will now be held at other facilities on base.

The center offers a variety of entertainment including video game stations, pool tables, foosball, darts, ping pong and a small Internet area -- all for free. Additionally, snacks and a variety of beverages are available for purchase.

"The addition of more game systems and the Internet accessibility are definite improvements," said Ms. Angela Winchester, 28th Services Squadron family member programs flight chief.

"The new building is a lot smaller, but I think it's a much nicer and inviting space," Mr. Canaan said. "We spent a lot of time decorating and turning it into a cool Airmen hang out."

That effort is paying off.

"The new décor is more appealing to the eye," Ms. Winchester added.

Although the doors to the community center are already open Monday through Thursday, noon until 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, noon until 11 p.m., there will be a grand opening Dec. 15, 3:30 until 5 p.m. Afterward, there will be an Airmen Halo 2 tournament at 6 p.m. and a pool tournament at 7 p.m.
