ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – Members of the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron’s emergency management office directed an annual Emergency Prepare-a-Thon event inside the Base Exchange Sept. 30, 2016.

The Emergency Prepare-a-Thon is designed to promote overall preparedness during natural disasters and unexpected emergencies. Throughout the event, 28th CES personnel handed out pamphlets that included information on proper equipment needed to stay safe during the upcoming winter season.

“The Prepare-o-Thon was established to inform the base populous on certain hazards that effect a northern tier base such as this one,” said Airman 1st Class Rachael Jonas, an emergency management apprentice assigned to the 28th CES. “We cover everything from forest fires, blizzards, heavy snow fall and so on.”

The pamphlets included recommendations for items people should have in many situations such as water and food – at least a three day supply – a flashlight with extra batteries, a first-aid kit including any medications needed, a cell phone with a charger, warm clothing, baby and pet supplies, as well as sanitation and personal hygiene items.

“The goal is to make the base community safer and better equipped during disasters when and if they happen,” said Senior Airman Ronald Reynolds, an emergency management journeyman assigned to the 28th CES. “We usually keep a tally on how many people show up and how many pamphlets we give out; it’s been increasing every year since the word is getting out more.”

The Prepare-o-Thon is a program initiated throughout the nation and is especially important for new Airmen who might not be aware of the potential dangers that persist in the area.

“A lot of new Airmen are always coming in and it’s important to let them know what’s going on and how to prepare,” Jonas explained. “Emergency situations can come at any time, so it’s important for people to be ready.”
