With the forecasted weather, check out these safety precautions for driving on base and walking on ice and snow.

During Road Condition Green, drivers must follow all posted speed limits on the installation.

Road Condition Yellow means driving 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit but not to exceed 25 miles per hour.

Finally, Road Condition Red means limit speed to a maximum of 10 miles per hour on general roadways, and 5 miles per hour in military family housing and parking areas. Travel is restricted to mission essential personnel and base residents traveling to and from their place of employment. Persons found to be in violation of this traffic instruction (i.e. recreational driving, non-emergency visitation, etc.) are subject to being cited in accordance with this traffic code, and to points being assessed on their driving record accordingly.

When driving off base, keep these advised speed changes in mind. Additionally, the interstate may be closed between some exits during heavy snowfall.

If roads and interstates are closed, do not go around closed gates and return to a safe area nearby, including restaurants, gas stations and rest areas.

Additionally, stay with your vehicle if you become stranded. Clear the exhaust of snow, use your winter survival kit, and remember – help will come to you.

Finally, when walking on snow or ice, walk slowly and wear appropriate footwear. Clear entrances, exits and designated walkways and “walk like a penguin.”
