ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- It was a cold Saturday in February, with steam coming from the mouths of the Raiders shuffling boxes around into the truck. Clint Simmons, a four-time cancer survivor, was ecstatic to have 27 Airmen from Ellsworth Air Force Base help him and his family with their last-minute move to Florida.
Clint and his wife, Holly, heard the news that they needed to move out of their house while on their way back from his cancer treatment, and with just the two of them, they needed some help.
A longtime friend with Ellsworth AFB ties heard about their struggle and wanted to lend a helping hand.
Chief Master Sgt. Wayne Jones, the command chief for the Defense Commissary Agency at Kapaun Air Station, Germany, knew he needed to assist his friends of 40 years once he heard the news.
Jones employed the help of fellow service members he’d met over the years, and got into contact with Master Sgt. William Glynn, the 28th Munitions Squadron armament flight chief, who was more than happy to help.
“We expected 10 to 12 people to come out and assist, but we had 27 people show up, which made loading up their belongings take just a few hours,” Glynn said. “It’s a fantastic thing and it’s great to see how a group of Airmen can come together for someone they don’t even know, on their day off, and give their support.”
With a 20-plus-hour drive awaiting them on their way to Jacksonville, Florida, the Simmons were elated to have to help.
“It’s been a godsend because there is no way I could have done it myself. I’ve got cancer and it’s kickin’ my [butt],” Clint said. “I didn’t expect this many people, but I’m sure glad they all showed up.”
