Nearly 150 Ellsworth Airmen, family members and friends will team up with area police officers, firefighters and other first responders for an 11-mile rucksack march on Sept. 8 to commemorate the 11th anniversary of 9/11.

"More than 3,000 lives were lost that day, including several hundred firefighters, police officers and other emergency responders," said Staff Sgt. Glenn Marcy, 28th Security Forces Squadron training instructor, and event organizer. "Since the tragic events of 9/11, our country has fought in two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq where many of our fellow Airmen have paid the ultimate price. It is fitting that we are doing this with first responders from throughout the Black Hills, a clear demonstration of how events 11 years ago united us as a nation."

The march will begin at 7:30 a.m., Sept. 8, on Ellsworth Air Force Base, proceed out the base's commercial gate and down the service road along Interstate 90. The march will conclude with a special ceremony at Rushmore Crossing as part of the Disaster Awareness and Safety Day organized by the Rapid City Pennington County Emergency Management Office.
