Weapon Registration Published Jan. 31, 2012 By Maj. Steven K. Ohlmeyer. 28th Bomb Wing Security Forces Squadron ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Due to incidents that recently occurred on base housing with individuals carrying or storing unregistered privately owned weapons, a reminder is being issued in regards to weapon registration. It's a requirement for all personnel residing in base housing or in the dormitories to register privately owned weapons with Security Forces. Do not confuse privately owned weapons with firearms. Per Air Combat Command supplement to AFI 31-101, firearms are not authorized inside the dormitories. The requirement to register privately owned weapons not only benefits servicemembers in the event of an incident, but it's also an officer safety issue during routine domestic calls, loud noise complaints and suicidal ideations. ISSUE: The Ellsworth Air Force Base Integrated Defense Plan states all personnel residing at EAFB are required to register their POWs on AF Form 1314 and firearm registration with filed copies maintained at the Security Forces Armory. FACTS: Firearm registration has been directed by the wing commander and has been codified in the IDP. Some servicemembers residing on base may be unaware of this requirement, especially if individual squadrons have not included this as part of their in-processing checklists. The base housing guide also states in paragraph 4.6. Firearms and Fireworks: All personnel living in base housing will register their POWs with SF Armory. Housing occupants may store their POW's in their residence providing they are maintained in an unloaded fashion, secured under lock and key and kept out of reach of children. Base housing residents may not store firearms for dorm residents or for those who are required to use the base armory. ACTION: In addition to public forum venues, this requirement should be captured by all Airmen's squadron in-processing checklists. All personnel should include and update additional firearms purchases on the AF Form 1314 kept on file with ones unit point of contact and at the SFA.
