Ellsworth Airmen tested their emergency response skills during a major accident response exercise, May 19.

The exercise allowed squadrons from across the base to team up and respond to a simulated midair collision between two aircraft.

"The objective of this exercise was to identify areas of improvement, and to evaluate the effectiveness of emergency response procedures," said Lt. Col. William Dobbs, 28th Bomb Wing chief of wing plans and programs.

The exercise began mid-day when the plans and programs office used a propane cannon to simulate the sound of the midair collision. Within minutes, Airmen from the 28th Security Forces Squadron and base fire department responded to the scene.

First responders simulated attacking the flames while others set up a protective cordon to keep people out of the area. Wing leadership utilized the base Giant Voice system to ask families to stay calm and remain safely in their homes.

Airmen from the 28th Medical Group honed their skills, implementing triage procedures while administering self aid and buddy care to people suffering from simulated injuries. The exercise concluded after the last search and recovery goal was reached.

Master Sgt. Robert Mulder, 28th BW superintendent of wing plans and programs, explained the usefulness of actively participating in these types of exercises.

"This kind of exercise brings all facets of first responders together," he said. "As a result, responders are able to experience the processes together, and learn how to react to potential real crises as members of a well-coordinated, cohesive team."
