Ellsworth's Multicultural Committee kicked off its first multicultural observance with a day filled with sports, international pride displays and a variety of free, international snacks and refreshments at the Pride Hangar, May 3.

The event marked the beginning of Ellsworth's six-week multicultural appreciation period, now through June 10.

"This year's theme, 'Evolving Roots: American Culture,' focuses on how diversity is the root of America's success as a nation," said 1st Lt. Jason Carter, 28th Medical Support Squadron readiness flight commander. "We are all different, but we are all Americans."

For the first time, Ellsworth has combined all nine of the Department of Defense's designated cultural appreciation months into one observance.

Airmen from nearly every group across the base represented their cultural heritage by providing ethnic food and engaging in a variety of sporting events. The sporting events included bocce ball, ultimate football, pingpong, sumo wrestling, speed chess and a tug of war.

Master Sgt. Tina McFadden, 28th CPTS first sergeant, participated in the day's events and encouraged Airmen to get involved by following her example.

"If I can sign up for tug of war, you can, too," she said. "Get out there and have some fun!"

Lieutenant Carter said the team exercises were designed to provide Airmen fun ways to express their pride and respect for each other's cultural differences.

"It's important to get to know everyone on your Ellsworth team, to respect them for their cultural heritages and celebrate the unique contributions they bring to the U.S. Air Force," he said.

For those who missed out on the action, the Equal Opportunity office has a variety of currently ongoing and upcoming events, including weekly readings for children at the base Child Day Care center, an essay contest, Karaoke competitions, a Cultural Diversity 5K run on May 24, and an event finale dinner at Dakota's Club on June 10.
