Holiday present for Ellsworth Airmen Published Dec. 23, 2010 By Senior Airman Jarad A. Denton 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- After the holidays, Ellsworth Airmen will have the opportunity to take the recently re-modeled track at the PRIDE Hangar for a test run. The PRIDE Hangar's old running track was replaced with a modern, rubberized track that Airmen will be able to use for physical training workouts and tests. "Our Airmen are working hard to be ready for combat, and fitness is a part of that readiness," said Col. Jeffrey Taliaferro, 28th Bomb Wing commander, during a tour of the facility, Dec. 22. "This overhaul is an effort to buy down the risk of injury as they do that work." The remodeled track cost more than $200,000 and spans 880 feet, roughly the same length as the previous track. Airmen can still expect to run nine laps to complete their 1.5 mile PT test requirement. However, the rubberized track will provide a more comfortable running surface for Airmen to use while maintaining a lifestyle. "We're hoping the quality of this track will entice Airmen to run more," said Col. Trent Edwards, 28th Mission Support Group commander. "The track is well-designed, easier on the knees and looks more professional. It's like running on a college track."
