The Ellsworth Air Force Base fire department played host to a group of firefighters and family members from Apolda, Germany, Oct. 6.

The tour was part of a sister city exchange program between Rapid City, S.D. and Apolda.

What started as a communication between the mayors of both cities quickly grew to include local area high schools, physicians and fire departments. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the exchange program - and the fourth time the tour group has been able to come to Ellsworth.

"This has been a fantastic experience for both cities," said Capt. Mark Kirchgesler, Rapid City fire department training division. "Friendships have been built on both sides."

In the spirit of forging lasting friendships, the touring group was able to see the capabilities and equipment - such as the various vehicles used, of the Ellsworth fire department, as presented by the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department assistant chief, Chief Steve Hilton.

Chief Hilton said the great relationship Ellsworth's fire department has with the Rapid City fire department is what allows the exchange program to function so effectively.

"This has been a fun experience for both sides," Chief Hilton said. "It goes to show that we all share a love of the badge, no matter where we are."
