The under secretary of the Air Force paid a visit to Airmen of the 28th Bomb Wing in order to get a first-hand look at the wing's mission, Aug. 27.

In addition to briefings on the base and on-going operations, Under Secretary of the Air Force Erin C. Conaton had the opportunity to fly in a B-1B Lancer during a routine training mission.

"I was absolutely thrilled by the opportunity to fly," Ms. Contaton said. "It gave me a unique perspective on what the Airmen here do every day in the service of their country as well as a better understanding of the flexibility and power that the B-1 is able to contribute to the Joint fight."

Ms. Conaton also discussed Air Force issues with base leadership and she underscored the importance of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' drive to reduce excess overhead costs and apply the savings to force structure and modernization.

"The Air Force is committed to putting every dollar to combat readiness," Ms. Conaton said. "We are working as hard as we can to identify every possible efficiency."

Colonel Jeffrey Taliaferro, 28th Bomb Wing commander said Ms. Conaton's visit was a great chance for the Airmen of Ellsworth to gain a broader perspective, and for the under secretary to get a closer look at our operations.

"This was a tremendous visit for our Airmen and the under secretary," said Colonel Taliaferro. "In addition to highlighting the outstanding mission of the base, it also provided Ms. Conaton a chance to see the strong relationship Ellsworth shares with the local community."
