Active-duty Airmen, their families and retirees have a free resource to help them file 2009 taxes at the Ellsworth tax center.

The tax center is located near the legal office in the Rushmore Center.

Center hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. The center is also open Feb. 27, March 27 and April 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Assistance is offered by appointment only and is free of charge. Airmen and retirees must bring several forms to their appointment.

Tech. Sgt. Stacy Moore, 28th Bomb Wing Legal Office, tax center NCO-in charge said people need to bring in a copy of last year's tax return, a military I.D., social security cards for themselves, their spouse, and dependants, and all their tax forms to include W-2s, 1098s or anything that shows a source of income from the last year and a voided check to verify account information.

Tax center volunteers will make sure all information goes on the correct tax forms.

The center is run by volunteers who have been trained by an employee from the Internal Revenue Service specifically on how to file tax returns for military members. All returns are filed electronically.

"It was real helpful," said Master Sgt. Lorin Ladson, 28th Maintenance Group First Sergeant. "Definitely worth coming over and getting it out of the way."

Several people had already scheduled appointments when the tax center opened, Jan. 25.

Airman 1st Class Richard Nelson, 37th Aircraft Maintenance Unit offensive avionics systems technician, said that the volunteers he worked with were very helpful and fun to work with.

Sgt. Moore says the tax center is open because of the time and energy put in by the volunteers.

The tax center will stay open until 4:30 p.m., April 15. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call (605) 385-5200.
