U.S. Air Force Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Demolition of Munitions Storage Facilities at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB), South Dakota

The U.S. Air Force has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) analyzing the potential environmental consequences resulting from the demolition of former munitions storage facilities located at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB), South Dakota.

The proposed action would demolish eight former munitions storage facilities totaling 31,300 square feet. These facilities are located in the northeast portion of Ellsworth AFB within the Munitions Storage Area (MSA). These facilities were constructed between 1952 and 1962 and are currently empty or underutilized. The facilities do not meet current and future mission requirements.
Demolition of the facilities would allow for future development opportunities within the MSA.

In addition to the proposed action, the Air Force also evaluated the environmental impacts associated with the no-action alternative. Under this alternative the eight facilities would remain in their current state.

A copy of the EA and FONSI will be available August 25, 2009 at the Rapid City Public Library 610 Quincy Street, Rapid City SD 57701. An electronic copy of the document is also located on the Ellsworth AFB webpage at http://www.ellsworth.af.mil. Alternatively, you may request a copy of the document from Ellsworth AFB Public Affairs at (605) 385-5056. Please provide any comments on the EA by September 28, 2009 to the address below.
