Ellsworth holds public meeting on compatible use study Published April 7, 2009 By 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Ellsworth would like to remind local community members about the public release of an updated Air Installation Compatible Use Zone study being conducted at Douglas Middle School April 27 at 7:00 p.m. This updated AICUZ Study was developed according to U.S. Air Force guidelines, which are designed to help local planning officials protect public safety and health, as well as preserve the operational capabilities of Ellsworth AFB. In addition to reviewing other land use considerations, the study reevaluates aircraft noise and accident potential based on military flying operations at Ellsworth AFB. Differences between the two studies are attributable to the changes in assigned and transient aircraft operations and flight patterns, and modifications to the DoD-approved noise-mapping software made after the release of the 1994 AICUZ study. During the meeting, Ellsworth representatives will introduce the AICUZ program, the study's methodology and results, potential uses of the AICUZ study, and U.S. Air Force and community responsibilities for compatible land use. A question-and-answer period will follow the formal presentation. "We believe it is vitally important to join local government and business leaders and residents in a cooperative effort to implement mutually-beneficial planning for the future," said Col. Scott Vander Hamm, 28th Bomb Wing commander. "Community members are encouraged to attend, and those who cannot may contact the 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs Office to find out how they can obtain a copy of the study." Questions regarding this AICUZ Study should be directed to the Public Affairs Office at Ellsworth AFB, 28th Bomb Wing, Office of Public Affairs, 1958 Scott Dr., Ste. 4, Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D. 57706 or by calling 605-385-5056.
