28 FSS re-invigorates anti-DUI incentive program Published Feb. 5, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Joshua Stevens 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Defending against cases of driving under the influence is an issue of utmost seriousness to not only the Air Force, but the entirety of the Department of Defense; the 28th Force Support Squadron helped to fortify this effort Feb. 3 by re-implementing an incentive program for squadrons that remain DUI-free for at least 90 days. When a squadron reaches the benchmark of 90 days, they will simply need to contact Gale Thompson, 28 FSS Community Services Flight chief, and they will be able to receive either three free games of bowling or one free nine-hole round of golf. "This is an ongoing program we thought we should re-energize," Mr. Thompson said. "With our operations tempo, permanent change of stations and such, we feel there are many squadrons that may not have known about this valuable [initiative]." We will not be checking with security forces to verify the 90-day span, he said. Integrity being 'core,' when we are notified from a squadron POC the goal has been achieved, we will trust it has. Since the incentive is reached by all members of the squadron as a team, these members will take part in the program as a team - there will be squadron events, rather than individuals coming in at their leisure. "To make this a manageable program and win/win for our Airmen and facilities, we will book a onetime party during off-peak business times when and where possible," Mr. Thompson said. "This will ensure we provide the 'reward,' while not interrupting our other customers during peak hours." For those squadrons with many personnel, plans are already in place. "Bandit Lanes can support up to 96 bowlers, and Prairie Ridge Golf Course can support up to 36 golfers during one event," Mr. Thompson said. "Any squadrons with more personnel participating will need a second event. This doesn't only apply to large squadrons, however. We'll also accommodate those squadrons that have shift workers. Our goal is to be as flexible as possible to meet the needs of the squadron and activity." He notes squadrons should mark a spot 90 days from now as a goal, so when the time comes, they can simply call him. In addition, it does not serve as a one-time only program. For subsequent intervals (i.e. 180 days, 270 days, etc.), the units are welcome to schedule again. The program is only a component of anti-DUI practices sponsored by force support. The 28 FSS is highly involved in the Culture of Responsible Choices, with our programs such as Discover the Hills , Mr. Thompson said. We also have year-round anti-DUI programs emphasizing [the benefits of not partaking in] alcohol consumption. The free bowling and golf offered to squadrons is another way we can help commanders say 'Good Job!' to their Airmen. "It would be difficult for us to judge [whether or not this can ensure prevented DUIs]," he said, "but if this program influences just one individual to think before getting behind the wheel after drinking, then we are successful." Top Ellsworth leadership lauded re-energizing the 28 FSS effort. "I commend the 28 FSS for seeking new venues to encourage DUI prevention across Ellsworth," said Col. Peter Castor, 28th Bomb Wing vice commander. "This effort truly promotes a Culture of Responsible Choices; I sincerely hope every base organization is able to reap the benefits of this program."
