Marathon participants are required to compete in events with their families or wingmen. "We really wanted to ensure there was something for everyone," said Tech. Sgt. Ann Mitchell, AFRC Readiness NCO. "This marathon provides military families and single Airmen a chance to get out and do things together while also being rewarded with great prizes." Winners of the month-long marathon will receive prizes targeted to the following groups: · Parents and their children-- a weekend at Wa Tiki indoor water park resort in Rapid City, S. D. · Married couples-- a weekend in Deadwood · Single Airmen-- a $100 gift certificate to Rushmore Mall (This statement does not constitute federal endorsement.) "Most of the events of the marathon will occur weekly at the Bellamy Fitness Center, Dakota's Club and the Bandit Lanes here," Sergeant Mitchell said. Events of the marathon include attending a free breakfast at the Freedom Chapel at 6:30, Nov. 13, Texas Hold'em at Dakota's Club at 6 p.m., Nov.14, Football Frenzy at Dakota's Club at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 16 and New Release Movie Night at the Black Hills Center at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 18. The marathon events are meant to emphasize appreciation for military members while promoting participation amongst military families and other single Airmen. "Whether they are Airmen, spouses or children of Airmen or civilians, we want to make sure they know they are appreciated," said Mary Lassalle-Adams, AFRC Community Readiness consultant. "The marathon allows the Ellsworth community to know firsthand they are appreciated." Entry sheets for participants in the marathon are available at the AFRC and must be returned upon completion by 4 p.m., Dec.1. Along with the marathon, an essay contest, sponsored by Army and Air Force Exchange Service, is also being promoted by the AFRC. The essay may be based on one of two topics, "What does the military mean to my family?" or "What does the military mean to me?" The winners of each category will receive a $100 gift card from AAFES. All essay entries should be turned into the AFRC by Dec. 1. For more information on either of these events, contact the AFRC at (605) 385-4663.
