The 2008 flu season is underway and many active duty personnel have already received their flu vaccine; dependent vaccinations will begin Oct. 21, but only for low-risk individuals ages 2 through 49 years.

Dependents in this category will receive FluMist, the nasal spray version of the vaccine, but those individuals in the following high-risk categories will receive a traditional flu shot as soon as supply allows:

- Children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years
- Adults 50 years of age and older
- Individuals with underlying medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, etc.)
- Individuals undergoing chemotherapy or with suppressed immune systems
- Pregnant women

High-risk individuals will receive a letter in the mail informing them when the vaccine is available, because, currently, the 28th Medical Group has not received its shipment of vaccine for high-risk dependents.

Spouses and dependents who would like to receive their shots now, however, have another option.

The flu shot is covered as a Clinical Preventive Service under TRICARE. Those enrolled in TRICARE Standard may receive their shot through any TRICARE certified provider; if enrolled in TRICARE Prime, they must see either their primary care manager or a TRICARE network provider. No referral is necessary for either option. Flu vaccine received through other agencies not completely covered under TRICARE will cost the member a penalty fee.

People may decrease their risk of catching and transmitting the flu by handwashing, which is very effective in preventing the spread of flu germs and, also, by getting plenty of rest, exercise and eating a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables.

In addition, avoid those who are ill. If you are the primary caregiver for someone who is ill, remind them to cover their mouth with their sleeve when they cough and to wash their hands frequently.

Questions and concerns about the flu or the vaccine should be directed to the 28 MDG at (605) 385-3698 or 3365.
