Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Ellsworth campus hosted its first class Aug. 11, after an absence of more than five years.

Ellsworth's ERAU campus originally closed its doors in 2003, but reopened July 1 to address an identified need.

"Around July 2007, maintenance personnel began asking about an educational program geared towards their career fields, specifically, Embry Riddle," said Hugh Watkins, Ellsworth campus associate director of academic support. "After a needs assessment, the education service officer started negotiations to bring Embry Riddle back to Ellsworth."

ERAU offers associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in professional aeronautics and aviation maintenance. It also offers a graduate degree program with a master of aeronautical science degree with specializations in aviation and aerospace management, operations and safety.

"I am working on my professional aeronautics degree and it helps that ERAU is here now," said Senior Airman Nathan Geno, 28th Maintenance Squadron aerospace ground equipment technician. "(ERAU campuses) were everywhere else I've been stationed and now that it's here, I'll be able to finish my degree."

According to ERAU students who attended campuses at other installations, the availability of the ERAU campus at Ellsworth helps improve educational continuity, reduces wasted credits that can result from changing educational institutions or degree programs and meets the needs of students who prefer classroom learning to online academics.

"Embry Riddle allows more interaction than online courses provide," said Senior Airman Allison Kornbau, 28th Operation Support Squadron air traffic controller. "I can ask questions and receive immediate feedback."

ERAU further addresses the needs voiced by the maintenance community through their acceptance of some military training and courses as college credit for both enlisted and officers, and through their partnership with the Community College of the Air Force.

"Our courses transfer to CCAF and vice versa," said Mr. Watkins. "Once you complete a Bachelor Degree, we can continue providing support and guidance with your Master program."

Although ERAU offers 38 years of experience in helping military members meet their educational goals, their programs are open to a much broader audience. ERAU in-residence and on-line courses are open to all eligible Airmen, Department of Defense Civilians and the immediate family members of both.

Registration for the next semester of classes at ERAU is Sept. 29 through Oct. 17; semester starts Oct. 20. For more information or to enroll, call (605) 923-6291 or visit their Web site at www.embryriddle.edu/ellsworth.
