Two privately owned vehicles were involved in a two-car accident at approximately 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the intersection of Lemay Boulevard and Lincoln Street.

"Two people were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital for further medical evaluation," said Staff Sgt. Dennis Rivers, 28th Security Forces Squadron investigations NCO in charge.

Both parties were treated and later released.

Members of the 28th SFS responded and diverted traffic flow to ensure the accident scene was both safe and secure for the on-scene investigators, Sergeant Rivers said.
Based on the security forces' accident report, one vehicle struck the right-passenger side of the second and came to a final rest near the center of the intersection. Both vehicles sustained damage.

Drivers are reminded they need to be patient with traffic, especially near or around construction zones, he said. In response, wing representatives reiterated a safety reminder for motor vehicle operators both on- and off-base.

"Drivers, especially when operating a motor vehicle in an unfamiliar area, need to use caution," said Leo Heuwagen, 28th Bomb Wing Safety occupational health specialist. "Be sure to adhere to posted speed limits and use defensive driving tactics -- be sure to look around and pay attention to the road."

Construction areas can also pose a danger when driving; motorists should not cut through established construction zones and heed the director of either workers or posted signs, he said.

Some distractions that can inhibit a driver's ability to properly control their vehicle are loud music, cell phone usage and other passengers, Mr. Heuwagen said. All of these should be avoided while driving to help ensure the safety of all on the road. Loud music and cell phone usage while driving on-base are illegal and 28 SFS will pull over drivers not adhering to the rules.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
