On-base vehicle accident raises safety awareness

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. --  Two privately owned vehicles were involved in a two-car accident at approximately 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at the intersection of Spaatz Drive and Schriever Street. 

"No injuries were reported by either vehicle operator involved," said Staff Sgt. Dennis Rivers, 28th Security Forces Squadron investigations NCO in charge. 

Members of the 28 SFS responded and diverted traffic flow to ensure the accident scene was both safe and secure for the on-scene investigators, said Staff Sgt. Spencer Dale, 28 SFS training instructor. 

Based on the security forces' accident report, one vehicle struck the passenger-side front door of the second with its front bumper. Both vehicles came to a final rest near the center of the intersection and sustained damage. 

In response, wing representatives reiterated a safety reminder for motor vehicle operators both on- and off-base. 

"Drivers, especially when operating a motor vehicle in an unfamiliar area, need to use caution," said Leo Heuwagen, 28th Bomb Wing Safety occupational health specialist. "Be sure to adhere to posted speed limits and use defensive driving tactics - be sure to look around and pay attention to the road."

Some distractions that can inhibit a driver's ability to properly control their vehicle are loud music, cell phone usage and other passengers, Mr. Heuwagen said. All of these should be avoided while driving to help ensure the safety of all on the road. Loud music and cell phone usage while driving on-base are illegal and 28 SFS will pull over drivers not adhering to the rules. 

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
