The Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is currently assisting 21 or more people displaced by flooding in the Box Elder area. Due to the immediate need for food and shelter, the Red Cross will open a shelter at Douglas Middle School, 401 Tower Rd. in Box Elder. The Salvation Army will be providing food at the Douglas Middle School shelter. This shelter is open as of June 5 at 1 p.m.

Rainfall is expected to increase throughout the day, and residents in low-lying areas or areas affected by the flooding should pack a bag containing extra clothing, medications, and other necessities in case of emergency evacuation.

The flooding has also affected 100 people near Whitewood and is impacting the Spearfish and Belle Fourche areas. The Red Cross will be monitoring needs in those areas and providing assistance as needed.

Residents affected by the flooding should contact (605) 342-4010 for assistance. Also, these residents can register their families at https://disastersafe.redcross.org. This website provides a point of contact for friends and family members who want to ensure that their loved ones are "safe and well."

The families and children affected by the flooding in the Black Hills need the immediate assistance with food, clothing, shelter, and support that the Red Cross provides. You can assist those impacted by the flooding by donating time and/or money to the Black Hills Area Chapter's Disaster Relief Fund.

The time and monetary donations made by residents of the Black Hills enable the Red Cross to assist families and children affected by floods free of charge. If you would like to donate time or money to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, please call (605) 342-4010 or visit the Black Hills Area Chapter at 1221 N. Maple Ave., Rapid City, S.D. 57701.
