Ellsworth is preparing for the Annual Base Cleanup Day May 30, an event which supports efforts to be good stewards of the environment and the safety of all who visit, work or live on Ellsworth.

"Base personnel will be asked to assist in cleaning up their duty section and the area surrounding each of their buildings," said 2nd Lt. Kimberly Dueffert, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron maintenance engineering chief. "Base organizations such as the Company Grade Officers' Council, Active Airmen Council, Group 5/6, Top Three and the Chiefs' Group will help clean up the green areas on base."

The green areas slated to be cleaned include areas around the lakes and sports fields, Lieutenant Dueffert said.

The 28 CES is also organizing a bulk office item pickup around the base between 9 and 11 a.m. Bulk item pickup must be prearranged by calling 28 CES at (605) 385-2209 or (605) 385-4386.

All items must be moved outside the office before the pickup crew arrives, Lieutenant Dueffert said.

There will also be a housing bulk item pickup (including Dakota Ridge) June 2. Individuals need to have any items curbside before the 9 or 11 a.m. pickup.

Servicemembers must coordinate with HAZMART to dispose of hazardous items such as aerosols, batteries or other chemicals, Lieutenant Dueffert said. HAZMART can be reached at (605) 385-4727.

Wing leadership expressed the importance of taking the time to assist in the annual cleanup day.

"I would like to thank everyone ahead of time for their involvement in our base clean up day," said Col. Peter Castor, 28th Bomb Wing vice commander. "We are blessed to be assigned to a base with such exceptional facilities. As good stewards of the environment and Air Force resources, it is our responsibility to ensure the beautification and safety of Ellsworth for its members, their families, and the local community."
