Opportunity knocks outside active duty

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- One stop all members who have completed their term of enlistment must make while outprocessing is with the in-service recruiter, but Airmen may want to make that stop earlier.

Tech. Sgt. Daniel Sharp, 28th Mission Support Squadron in-service recruiter, said Airmen are eligible to apply through a program called Palace Chase to end their active duty service commitment halfway through by completing their term in the United States Air Force Reserve.

The process of applying consists of filling out an application, having your commander sign off on it and forwarding it to the Palace Chase staff at Randolph Air Force Base. It may take up to eight weeks for the application to be approved or disapproved.

If approved, the applicant will be able to leave active duty and move to the USAFR unit of his choice within 90 days.

If disapproved, the applicant may reapply after 120 days. Retraining may be necessary and is available for those interested.

The USAFR offers many benefits and entitlements such as unlimited use of base facilities, education and space-available travel.

"Anyone with less than 20 years in and considering getting out should come see me," Sergeant Sharp said. "Don't waste the time you've put in; keep working toward that retirement and continue getting paid."
