Airman 1st Class Ehud Torres Published Jan. 25, 2007 By Airman Nathan Riley 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Airman 1st Class Ehud Torres, 28th Maintenance SquadronWhat did your job entail in the deployed environment? While deployed to the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia, I completed nondestructive inspections - that means I look for cracks on the following aircraft: B-1B, KC-135, C-130, JSTARS, C-17, and F-15. I looked for cracks utilizing eddy current, ultrasonic fluorescent dye penetrant, fluorescent magnetic particle, and radiographic inspections techniques. What was your duty title? Nondestructive inspection journeyman How did it differ from your duties at Ellsworth? It differed tremendously. Ellsworth has only the B-1B. While deployed, I worked on several other aircraft and I experienced a lot of things I wouldn't normally have at Ellsworth. What were the most satisfying/rewarding parts? The most satisfying and rewarding part of my deployment was when I saw the jets take off and knew that I helped maintain that jet. What would/did you tell your replacement? The deployment location is not as bad as some people make it out to be. Some people have it a lot worse. It's what you make of it. It has gone by quickly and I really enjoyed my experiences. What did you miss the most about home? I really just missed the United States. There is much more variety in the United States and a lot more to do. What will you miss most about deploying? I will miss the people that I met and the friendships that I made. I will also miss the learning experiences I gained from working on more than one aircraft. Describe any moments that were especially gratifying/exciting/eventful. My favorite moment was when I was selected to marshal an F-15 Eagle. Also, just keeping all the aircraft in the air feels great.
