Why do you volunteer?
I feel that helping people is what we should do; it's what I'd like done for me if I were in need. I also feel that if you're not part of the solution, then you're probably part of the problem.

First Lt. Winell San Jose de Mesa is from Orlando, Fla., and is a member of the best medium sized security forces unit in the Air Force, the 28th Security Forces Squadron. Lieutenant de Mesa was commissioned at the University of South Florida and earned his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Florida. He helped construct two houses in Rapid City for low-income families as part of the South Dakota chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He coordinated the escort team for the 28th Mission Support Group change of command. As a member of the honor guard, he provided distinguished visitor escorts and was a member of the drill team that performed when the 12th Air Force commander visited Ellsworth. In addition, he helped the unit clean up the Heritage Lake playground and improve safety for patrons.
