ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – The 28th Security Forces Squadron was recognized as the 2021 Air Force Best Medium SF Unit March 21, 2022.

Security forces units throughout the Air Force compete in three different categories for the award: small, medium, and large. Ultimately, the winning units are chosen based on the Airmen’s accomplishments and improvements to the overall mission.

The 28th SFS competed against 35 other medium units to win the prestigious award. The unit first won at the Air Force Global Strike Command level prior to winning at the Air Force level.

“This award is a representation of the incredible hard work being accomplished by our senior non-commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers, and Airmen,” said Maj. Rudy McIntyre, 28th SFS commander. “I just want to say thank you to every single Airman in the unit for their dedication and commitment to the mission.”

The 240 Total Force defenders that make up the squadron supported several mission assets to include preparation for the B-21 Raider beddown, as well as being the first in the Air Force to have the next generation of M-4 Carbine rifles. These Airmen have continued to contribute to the mission in a number of ways, allowing the unit to be named best in the Air Force.

“Our drive wasn’t to win an award, we are just trying to prepare our unit for the future,” said Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Carpino, 28th SFS senior enlisted leader. “This award just validates our Airmen have accomplished throughout the year and how great of defenders we have within this organization.”
