Airmen and spouses from the 28th Bomb Wing stepped away from daily operations on Feb. 10, 2026, to invest in their relationships during a pre-Valentine’s couples event hosted by the Ellsworth Chaplain Corps at Canvas 2 Paint in Rapid City, S.D.

Seventeen couples participated in the program, which combined a guided painting session with practical discussion based on "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. The event provided an opportunity for connection outside the duty environment while reinforcing habits that build healthy, resilient marriages.

“Our goal was to create a night that was enjoyable but also intentional,” said Chaplain Capt. Jennifer Pottinger. “We want couples to walk away with tools they can use right away to communicate better, care for one another and stay connected despite the pace of military life.”

Throughout the evening, couples discussed how individuals both express and receive love differently and considered simple ways to apply those insights at home. Organizers selected an off-base location to help participants disengage from routine demands and concentrate on each other.

“We want to encourage Airmen and spouses to keep dating each other,” Pottinger said. “Strong marriages are built through consistent investment.”

Nahaida Calhoun, a co-facilitator for the event, said the chapel team designed the program to be welcoming for couples across a range of experiences.

“You can have fun together and still gain something meaningful,” Calhoun said. “If even one small change improves communication at home, that has lasting impact.”

Chaplains underscore that relationship health is directly tied to readiness. Airmen who experience stability and trust within their families are better positioned to focus on the mission, support their units and navigate operational stress.

The Chaplain Corps offers year-round opportunities focused on spiritual fitness, relationship enrichment and personal resilience for members of the Raider Wing and their families.
