Public Health Advisories: Influenza, Zika virus Published Feb. 16, 2016 28th Medical Group Public Health ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- The 28th Medical Group Public Health office has updated Public Health Advisories regarding seasonal influenza and the Zika virus, which include lists of symptoms and tips for preventing each virus. Influenza: The Centers for Disease Control estimates each year on average five to 20 percent of the U.S. population contracts influenza, resulting in the hospitalization of more than 200,000 people. The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get your annual flu vaccination. Other good health habits to avoid the flu are to avoid close contact with people who are sick, cover your mouth and nose with tissue when coughing or sneezing, wash your hands with soap and water regularly, stay home when sick if possible and clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces. Zika virus: The Zika virus is an emerging virus transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and has now spread to 24 countries, including Barbados, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has a high potential for spreading in countries where mosquitos are present, and the CDC advises women who are pregnant to defer travel to areas of ongoing Zika virus transmission. No vaccine or specific medicine currently exists to prevent or treat Zika virus; however, safety precautions should be taken in areas where mosquitos are present, including wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants and sleeping under mosquito netting when outdoors.
