The U.S. Department of Defense stated nearly 8,000 substantiated incidents of domestic abuse were reported to the department during fiscal year 2013.

Each year, October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout the U.S. as a way to remove stigmas attached to reaching out for help and increase awareness of available resources.

This year, the 2015 theme is "Light in the Window" and signifies community solidarity toward ending domestic violence. Additionally, Light in the Window provides an opportunity for others to discuss the context in which domestic violence occurs and shows support for victims. Candles will be on display in commander's and first sergeant's offices beginning Oct. 1, and will remain lit during the month.

Additionally, throughout October, Ellsworth is hosting multiple events to raise awareness of domestic violence and show support for its survivors.

The Health and Wellness Center is sponsoring a Walk for Your Cause ribbon awareness event Oct. 14, with Family Advocacy hosting a Purple Ribbon Luncheon honoring Working Against Violence, Inc., Oct. 27.

For more information on events, or to discuss available resources for domestic violence victims, call Family Advocacy at (605) 385-3660.
