Stay afloat with swimming safety Published Aug. 10, 2015 By Airman 1st Class James L. Miller 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Editor's note: This is the second in a series of four articles about summer activities and safety. During the sweltering sizzle of the summer sun, most find their escape from the heat in their local pools. With both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, Ellsworth Air Force Base provides water recreation for all ages. The indoor pool is located in the Bellamy Fitness Center, with the second facility located nearby at the Youth Center. Additionally, the outdoor pool provides a water slide and kiddie pool. Safety should be the first concern for all guests when playing in or near pools. "We have a swim test for all [children] who want to swim by themselves in the pool," said Hunter Bullington, life guard. "If anyone cannot pass the swim test, they must wear a life jacket while in the pool." Flotation devices must be Coast Guard certified to be used in the pool. Pool noodles, blow up arm floaties and other pool toys are not substitutes for a life jacket, Bullington said. Another concern with swimming is dehydration. Although swimmers may be surrounded by water while swimming, they still run the risk of becoming dehydrated. "It's important to take breaks often and get something to drink," Bullington said. "It can help prevent you from dehydrating, even if it is just a two-minute water break." Signs of dehydration can range from dry mouth to headaches and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, find a cool, shaded area and be sure to drink plenty of water, Bullington added. All life guards on base go through an intensive training class to ensure they are qualified to prevent any unsafe situation from happening and prepared to act if it does. Life guards are present during pool hours for a safe swimming environment. "It is more about preventing things from happening, rather than fixing them," Bullington said. "Catching things before they happen is the key." For more information, call the Bellamy Fitness Center at (605) 385-2266.
