Ellsworth's Airman and Family Readiness Center provided multiple financial management classes for Airmen as a part of the DOD-wide Military Saves Week, Feb. 23 through 27.

In a five-day span, the Air Force joined thousands of organizations across the nation who participated in what is known as America Saves Week, to raise awareness about having a savings plan and staying financially stable.

Laurie Adkins, 28th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant, explained that financial stability is vital throughout one's career and life.

"Our goal at the AFRC is to let people know that we are here for them," Adkins said. "Whether they are coming to us as a proactive measure or a reactive reason, we offer classes and personal meetings to help Airmen with their finances."

During Military Saves Week, the AFRC hosts classes that provide information on college scholarships, budgeting, investing, credit scores and more.

"We have a class every day of the week offering classes to help Airmen be more educated on their financial options," Adkins explained. "We are also starting a stock market game that should be a good way for Airmen to get their feet wet with investing in stocks."

In addition to providing multiple classes for Airmen during Military Saves Week, the AFRC offers one on one financial counseling and weekly financial management classes year-long.

Master Sgt. Joseph Wengler, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron first sergeant, said it is important for Airmen to look into investing options or learn about how to create a savings account because the future is never certain and it is always important to have a plan.

"I encourage Airmen to see Laurie on a consistent basis," Wengler added. "Whether it is because they've found themselves in a financial bind or they're just looking for a way to improve their financial situation, she is able to provide quality help."

Wengler noted that it is important to set a goal that you can remember and remind yourself why you are saving.

"Being financially stable helps me sleep better at night," Wengler said. "Knowing that my finances are in check keeps me from worrying about what I will do if something comes up. I am also comforted to see myself getting a step closer to my savings goal each month."

Adkins added she is able to pull a free credit score report for anyone affiliated with the military.

"Knowing and understanding your credit score can really benefit you prior to buying a car or financing something," Adkins emphasized. "It's very important to arm yourself with this information before you start looking to make a major purchase."

Wengler explained that financial information is available for Airmen, and Adkins can provide insight and information on subjects  Airmen may be unfamiliar with.

"Laurie and the AFRC are absolute assets to the base," Wengler added. "I give her a call whenever I have a question or an Airman comes to me with one. She is always readily available to help."
