ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE --
In less than a month after opening its doors, volunteers at the base Tax Center have saved Airmen more than $44,500 in preparation fees. And there's still time on the clock.
More than 200 personnel from Ellsworth have received assistance preparing their taxes from trained tax preparers. Active duty members, family members and retirees are eligible for the free support to complete and file their personal tax returns.
According to Master Sgt. William Brewer, Ellsworth Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site coordinator, 25 volunteers have tallied up more than $537,400 in refunds for those eligible as of Feb. 20.
"It's a good opportunity for military members to help out fellow and former servicemembers, in addition to saving the taxpayer an average of $182 in preparation fees downtown," Brewer added.
The Tax Center, located in suite 1300 of the Rushmore Center will be up and running until April 15. Personnel can use the resource by appointment only, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to noon, and from 1 to 3 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call the Tax Center at (605) 385-8298.
