October is Energy Action Month and the Air Force's theme this year is, "I am Air Force Energy," putting Airmen at the center of the campaign.

"Energy is a fundamental component of all Air Force operations," as stated in a letter to all Airmen from senior Air Force Leadership. "The smart use of energy means flying our aircraft farther, transporting more cargo and accomplishing our mission in a more efficient and effective way."

Ellsworth has maintained efficient energy management by assuring energy advantage in air, space and cyberspace according to Ted Cleberg, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron base energy manager.

"Since 2003, Ellsworth has saved over $8 million in energy bills," said Cleberg. "We are currently working on eight projects affecting more than 40 buildings on base that will improve energy efficiency and workplace quality."

The conservation projects include heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades, installing building insulation and retrofitting efficient lighting both indoors and outdoors.

"We've installed infrared heating and high efficiency boilers that run the blowers for just a few minutes after the hangar doors have been opened to reheat the area," said Tech Sgt. Alfred Bernard, 28th CES base energy assistant. "These installations are not only energy efficient, but they provide a warm working environment."

Ellsworth's goal to reduce 30 percent of its energy intensity by 2015 was surpassed in 2012 when the base reduced energy intensity by 32 percent.

"By identifying the facilities that use the most energy, we've been able to focus our efforts in completing energy-saving projects in those specific locations," said Cleberg.

Bernard added that Energy Action Month isn't intended to be the only month when Airmen should be more aware of their actions, but is meant to be a time when Airmen learn to conserve resources and use energy more efficiently.

"Every bit counts in attaining our energy conservation goals," said Cleberg. "Every Airman can do their part by creating habits that save base energy. Even simple things like turning off computer monitors and workplace lights before leaving for the day can make a huge difference."

To show support and raise awareness about Energy Action Month, the 28th CES will be hosting a 5k Energy Fun Run at the Pride Hangar, Oct. 31, 2014 starting at 7 a.m. To find out more information call (605) 385-5252.
