August is Immunization Awareness Month

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- National Immunization Awareness Month alerts Airmen and their families to the potential risks of infectious diseases and encourages them to take precautions to protect their health with immunizations.

Each August, health professionals and medical staff nation-wide emphasize the importance of vaccinations to help safeguard against dangerous and sometimes deadly diseases.

"As a medical troop, it's my job to educate the public and inform them on how to be proactive when it comes to their health," said Staff Sgt. Lafonda Washington, 28th Medical Operations Squadron immunizations technician. "This way they can be sure they are taking the necessary steps to being happy and healthy in the years to come."

Vaccines work in conjunction with the body's natural defenses to develop immunity to diseases and ultimately prevent the spread of harmful diseases such as polio, measles, and tuberculosis.

Washington also added that with the school year about to begin, parents should make sure their children's immunization records are current.

"Immunizations for children are important because most schools and daycares will not allow children to attend unless they are vaccinated," said Washington.
