Prescription controlled substance use guidance

Prescription controlled substances such as oxycodone, hydrocodone and tramadol should only be used for as long as a specific health issue persists, and will vary from person to person. This time frame should be determined between a patient and his or her healthcare provider, but should not be longer than six months without medical documentation to recommend continued use.

After the specific health problem has been resolved, remaining medication should not be stored for later use as they can pose deadly health risks for children, houseguests, and pets.

Legal action can also result from taking a controlled substance for a purpose other than for what it was originally prescribed, and for taking a controlled substance that was not prescribed to you.

Controlled substances can be turned in at the Commissary during Drug Take Back Days led by the Drug Enforcement Administration or into the green bin at the base pharmacy on any other day. These may also be disposed of by mixing them with an undesirable substance such as used coffee grounds, kitty litter, etc. and placing them in the trash.
