Col. Kevin Kennedy, 28th Bomb Wing commander, addressed an assembly of Airmen during a commander's call May 22 in the Pride Hangar.

During the event, Kennedy focused on Ellsworth's accomplishments, stressed making safety a part of all events and activities and honed in on the meaning behind Memorial Day.

Kennedy lauded the Airmen attending, thanking them for their hard work and commitment to the mission over the past several months while enduring an intense inspection, conducting exercises and remaining steadfast in their resolve to provide expeditionary combat power.

With the onset of increased outdoor activities throughout the summer, Capt. Gavin O'Brien, 28th Bomb Wing Safety Office chief, took to the stage and encouraged everyone to enjoy the local area, but to assess the situation, mitigate risk and prevent mishaps.

"Maybe you shouldn't pick the hardest trail or the biggest jump out there," said O'Brien. "Oftentimes it's slowing down and taking a moment to analyze those situations."

O'Brien stressed a responsible approach to all recreational activities, especially motorcycle riding, requiring all personnel to wear appropriate personal protection equipment when riding.
Safety will continue to be a top priority at Ellsworth because Airmen are the Air Force's greatest asset, he added.

At the conclusion of the event, Kennedy asked each Airmen to take the time to focus on the meaning of Memorial Day and recognize the sacrifices made by all those who paid the ultimate price to preserve freedom.

The address concluded with several Airmen placing ceremonial wreaths to honor those who gave their lives for their country.
