Friends and neighbors from throughout the area are invited to attend the base's open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 16.

While there will be no headline flying acts for Ellsworth's Black Hills Community Appreciation Day, event planners are preparing to have B-1 and B-52 bomber static displays, a variety of ground acts including a 28th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog demonstration, food booths and entertainment.

"This is an opportunity to showcase our mission and provide a day for our friends from throughout the Black Hills to come out and not only get up close to the aircraft, but mingle with the Airmen serving at Ellsworth," said Col. Kevin Kennedy, 28th Bomb Wing commander. "The backing we receive from the community allows us to focus on the mission. We simply could not do our jobs without their support for us and our families. This is one way we can thank them for all they do."

The event coincides with the base picnic, which allows for even more interaction with base families and the community, according to Kennedy. Airmen will receive more details about the picnic from their supervisors and work centers.

Additional information about parking, security procedures and busing will be provided closer to the event.
