A free hunter safety course is available for Airmen, family members and anyone else interested in participating in hunting activities.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks office will offer three spring hunter safety courses in March and April.

Course dates are March 4 to 8, April 8 to 12 and April 22 to 26. All materials and firearms are provided. Classroom sessions are held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the SDGFP Outdoor Campus West located at 4130 Adventure Trail, Rapid City. Outdoor range sessions are from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Rapid City Trap Club off South Hwy 79.

The courses consist of three classroom sessions and one outdoor range session. Students must attend all four sessions of the course to receive a hunters safety card, a requirement for anyone to hunt in South Dakota and several other states.

Dave Routh, 28th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation aid, explained the importance of attending the safety course.

"Safety should be at the forefront of any hunting trip," Routh said. "There are too many risks for it not to be." He added that everyone should take time to learn about South Dakota's hunting and trapping rules and regulations to help them stay out of trouble.
