The 28th Force Support Squadron has transformed the former archery range along with the trap and skeet area, into its own unique space to allow Airmen to take full advantage of Ellsworth's great outdoor activities.

The close proximity of these ranges once created safety issues precluding concurrent use. The 28th FSS has increased the capability of these outdoor facilities, with the help of the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron who completed the project of moving the archery range across the street to its own area.

"The old range was small and co-located with the trap and skeet range," said Capt. Megan Grooms, 28th FSS community services deputy flight commander and project manager. "We wanted Airmen to be able use both areas at the same time and create a larger area to accommodate more people."

The archery range now includes seven hanging targets varying in distances from 20 to 50 yards. It features three targets at 20 yards, two at 30 yards and one at 40 and 50 yards each. The new shooting line has seven individual shooting stations to allowing for larger groups during peak times.

"This is a great outlet for Airmen to experience something new, participate in a great activity and maybe pick up a new outdoor hobby at no cost," said Dustin Born, 28th CES deputy chief of operations.

In order for Airmen and their families to use the facility, they have to sign up through the Outdoor Recreation Center. After reading through the rules, they will be given a range badge which must be carried at all times at the archery range. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, 18 years or older. Archers must stop by the Outdoor Recreation Center before heading to the range so they can be advised of the rules and appropriate safety considerations. There is no cost to use the range.

"I've been shooting archery for about five years and this offers a really close and convenient place for Airmen to come and practice," said Airman 1st Class Samantha Rule, 28th Bomb Wing Staff command administrator. "Hunting is a part of the culture in South Dakota and this range allows us to come participate and be immersed in the culture."

Personal equipment can be used out at the range at no cost, but Airmen and families are also able to get archery gear from the Outdoor Recreation Center. The equipment is free to single Airmen and is only $8 for all others. For more information about the new archery range call the Outdoor Recreation Center at (605) 385-2997.
