Airmen from the 28th Force Support and Civil Engineer Squadrons completed an 18-month remodeling process to the multipurpose courts located near the Bellamy Fitness Center at Ellsworth AFB June 23.

“The original courts were severely cracked and were no longer safe, deeming them unusable” said Lorie Vega, 28th FSS deputy director. “When we identified the need to repair the courts, a conscious decision was made to create a multi-use area that would accommodate a variety of recreational activities, such as tennis, volleyball, basketball and roller hockey.”

Vega said the new courts are designed to give maximum flexibility, whereas with traditional courts, there were no expanded options to hold special events, tournaments or adjust to customer interests and needs.

“The complex will offer adults and youth a diverse selection of recreational activities which we hope will encourage more physical activity and fitness,” Vega said. “Additionally, we can now use this area to provide more activities during base-wide events.”

Vega added that although the courts construction is complete, there are plans to add new skate equipment as the final section of the complex. Additionally, the new equipment will be movable so this space can also be converted to other uses if needed.
