They came from all walks of life: students, farmers, husbands and fathers.

Throughout history, they answered the call.

Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, stand together as one to receive praise and admiration from a grateful Nation. In honor of all veterans, past and present, Ellsworth Air Force Base shares four unique stories from local heroes, who defended the cause of freedom and lived to pass the lessons learned down to ours and future generations.

· In memory of service: Vern Faust, former U.S Navy coxswain third class, shares a story of surviving the loss of friends during World War II.

· Down the muddy river: Retired Master Sgt. Jack Dean gives an account of his time in Vietnam, when he was part of the "brown-water" Navy.

· Remembering freedom through sacrifice: Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Larry Scudder, former 90th Special Operations Squadron cryptologist, tells of the day his son was born while he was serving in Vietnam.

· Fire on the Savannah!:Former U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Electrician, Patrick O'Neill describes how he survived the Sept. 11, 1943 attack on his ship.
