"When all else fails egress will prevail"

VIDEO STORY TRASNCRIPT -- When you look at a B1 Bomber, there are thousands of parts that need constant maintenance to get the jet ready to fly. But if something were to go terribly wrong, one of those parts becomes much more important: the ejection seat. And that's what the Aircrew Egress Systems Section takes care of every day.

"I believe my job is one of the most important jobs out there because it is the last chance for the pilot to get out in case of an emergency. If an aircraft is going down, he needs to pull the handles, he needs to ride the rails, he gets out and it saves his life. So I believe it is one of the most important jobs out there for the aircraft maintenance. I've been involved in a couple ejections, so it is a pretty good feeling when he does get out." - SSgt. Cody Baker, Aircrew Egress Systems Craftsman

But this job is much more than just fixing up a seat. The Egress section has to install a parachute and an emergency kit into the seat, and make sure those parts will stay with the pilot when he or she ejects. Then there are more than 750 carefully controlled explosives connected to both the seat and the jet, and all of them have to be checked and rechecked for safety. On top of that the Egress section has to make sure all the other parts of the seat are in good working condition. And that's just for one seat. These Airmen have to make sure that all the ejection seats in every B-1 will work properly. And in this job there is no room for mistakes.

"I have to be one hundred percent on my job. I am the pilot's last chance for survival if everything else fails. So, my job has to be perfect to the T, no chance for errors, nothing. So, it's a pretty important job." - A1C Richard Baltazar, Aircrew Egress Systems Journeyman

And by working together, these Airmen can save lives. Reporting from Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, I'm Airman Kate Walker.
