Fire on the Savannah!
The U.S.S. Savannah (CL-42) is set afire immediately after she was hit by a German guided bomb during the Salerno operation, September 11, 1943. Smoke is pouring from the bomb's impact hole atop the ship's number three 6"/47 gun turret. (Photograph from the Army Signal Corps Collection in the U.S. National Archives.)
