Bombing of Monte Cassino
Ruins are all that’s left of the abbey at Monte Cassino in Italy after the aerial bombardment by B-17s from the 2nd Bomb Wing. The abbey was deemed a legitimate target due to military necessity during the battle, which lasted several months. The German commander denied his forces were using the historical monastery for military purposes. Historians and investigators later concluded he was, in fact, correct. The official record was corrected by the Office of the Chief of Military History in 1969. (Courtesy photo)
