This month in history: The Declaration of Independence's story
The Declaration of Independence displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The document was moved several times during the Revolutionary War and again in the War of 1812 to keep it from falling into British hands. The Declaration was filed in Philadelphia in the Continental Congress’ secretary’s office until 1789. The document was housed in several locations and not properly preserved until officially delivered to the National Archives in 1952.
