Red Baron
Manfred von Richthofen, known in history as “The Red Baron.” Despite association with the famous scarlet-red triplane, most of his 80 victories occurred in a two-winged Albatross D II or D III. Members of his Jasta, or squadron, were known as “The Flying Circus”. All of his pilots had some shade of red on their aircraft, but only Richthofen was allowed to have one solid shade of red. As his fame grew, some members of Allied air forces painted the noses of their own aircraft red, which was their way of announcing their intention to hunt down the Red Baron. He is credited with the downing of famed British Ace Maj. Lanoe Hawker, who became his eleventh victim. Controversy surrounds who actually killed von Richthofen April 21, 1918. (Air Force photo/Tech.
